Three Dog Mike, also known around town as Mike Calucchia, is a self-taught musician who is known for his vocals as well as playing mandolin, guitar, bass, and keyboards. Coming from a varied background of careers such as guiding whitewater, owning a restaurant in Butte, and elite speed skating, Mike has leaned into his musical talents even more over the last years and is part of two local Missoula bands.
Mike's dedication to his craft and diverse musical pursuits make him a solid presence in the local music scene. With a passion for creating original music, he is a founding member of the band "The Benevolents" where his musical creativity flourishes with his background vocals and his unusual electric mandolin tones.
In addition to his work with The Benevolents, Mike showcases his lead vocals and guitar playing in the duo "Three Dog Mike and One Cat Angie," performing covers from a vast array of eras and genres while Angie Jansen accompanies with her stroller accordion and backup vocals.
Mike has most recently started the non-profit Three Dog Mike Foundation for the welfare of local and regional animals. Most importantly, Mike spends most of his days in the outdoors with his three dogs: Bluto, Ginger, and Andy.
Harry (left): Mike found Harry on Harrison Avenue on Butte when he was a kitten. Harry was like playdough and let anyone do anything to him. Harry lived to be 22-years-old, a testament to the toughness of Butte.
Taco (right): Taco wandered into MIke's restaurant in Butte around midnight during closing duties and never left. Like most cat duos, one of them had to fill the role of troublemaker, and Taco happily filled that role. Taco lived to be 23-years-old
Hilda (left): Hilda came from the Butte shelter, which was a kill shelter at the time. Mike swooped her up and brought her home. She loved mountain biking and the agility it entailed with no fear of heights or cliffs. Mike fondly remembers her stubbornness and selective hearing.
Frannie (middle): Frannie also came from the Butte shelter and was days away from being put down. Frannie was a loyal lab mutt who loved everyone who she met. She loved a good game of fetch, especially if it was in the water.
Newt (right): Newt came from a friends' litter in Fleecer Mountain, MT. Newt was born with great genes and lived to be 16-years-old. Mike credits Newt for saving his life on a backcountry ski trip by alerting him to avalanche danger that the rest of the group missed. Newt loved his stuffed animals and would often walk around with one in his mouth. Newt was the obedient one of the group and was loyal to Mike to the ends of the earth.
Ginger (far left): This sassy lady started her life on the Blackfeet Reservation before finding her way to Pinter Pets in Anaconda, where Mike found her in 2012 and added her to the pack. Ginger is known for her fierce independence and expressive ears.
Andy (second from the right): Andy also hails from the Blackfeet Reservation and arrived at Pintler Pets as a puppy, where he stayed for four years before capturing Mike's heart in 2017. Andy is a typical herding mix and loves to have a job; his favorite is being the pack mule of the group and wearing his backpack.
Bluto (far right): Bluto, also known as Senator Blutarsky, came from a kill shelter in Idaho Falls in 2010. Mike met Bluto through a wonderful lady named Judy Paul who was known for rescuing animals from kill shelters and finding forever homes for them. Bluto is known for his healthy appetite and his love of cross-country skiing and swimming after sticks.
